Not sure what to do when?

Forget hyacinth bulbs for the classroom!

If you usually grow hyacinth bulbs in the classroom why not have a go at something more dramatic.

I bought these two bulbs on the 16 November and planted them the next day - less that two weeks later and they are off to a flying start. No need to keep them in the dark so you can watch the whole thing as it happens. A fully grown plant is dramatic too with large flowers up to 25 cm across on a flower stalk that reaches 90 cm or more. You can almost see them growing!!

If you haven't a class of children to impress why not grow one yourself - they also make an ideal gift.

I grow both. Hippeastrum are a little pricey for minor gifts, but a Hyacinth in a coffee mug or forcing vase delights most folks as they watch the blossoms unfold.

The Amaryllis I am growing is 'Exotica' -- when I saw the buds already emerged before they were planted, at the nursery, I had to have them.

Watching the progress of bulbs must be a thrill for your students. I hope you inspire many young gardeners.

Mine are just quite ordinary varieties that they were selling three for two at the nursery so my sister had the other. Hers has a bud already.

Must admit I haven't ventured into the exotic varieties just yet or the more expensive bulbs maybe one day.

The other advantage for the classroom is the lack of strong perfume as some children can't tolerate this and also the flowers seem to last a little longer.
